What was your trigger?                                                           December 4, 2009

Most people with a fear of public speaking have one particular experience that caused this anxiety to settle in. Maybe it was the time they were giving the results from their science project (comparing butter to becel margarine) and pronounced becel, bee-kul only to have some big asshole in the back of the room yell, “Its becel you dim wit.”

Sorry Lisa, I’ve changed.

For me, I remember my trigger all too well.  A few years after graduation I was asked to give a speech at my brother’s wedding and for some reason I was really nervous. The day finally came and I was well prepared with one hell of a joke to finish up with. As I began to speak my voice started shaking, my legs felt weak and my heart was pounding as if it was about to come out my chest.  I must have sounded like Miss Carolina would sound on a skipping CD. (See Video below). The end finally came and it was time for my big joke; I closed with the following.

``And lastly I would like to say never let the sun go down on your anger, or as I like to say it; never let her go down on you when she`s angry. ``

Everyone laughed and all seemed to be well except for the fact that I had no idea why I was so, extremely nervous. That was when my anxiety started and it only got worse from there. As I pondered and fretted over my condition, I could no longer speak to my boss without stuttering and shaking, I hated talking to anyone other than family on the phone and I even had trouble ordering a fricking happy meal at McDonalds.

What`s your trigger? Whatever it is, I’ve learned that the best thing to do is forget it ever happened. No one else remembers it like you do... except for that becel incident in science class, now that was hilarious. And Miss Carolinas question period because it was caught on tape and over 38 million people have viewed that video on youtube alone. But in cases like that youre best off to learn from your mistakes, laugh with the crowd, and just don't worry about it.
